Suggestions from John

John liked the new textured logo made from the potato prints, he wants me to try them in solid colour now. He said I could make detailed storyboards for the idents and record sound. However he said I should keep experimenting with the video camera. I showed him the new footage of the shadows on video. He thought they were very strong and fresh looking as he had never seen a TV ident like it. He wants me to focus on the shadow idea from now on.

I asked if he know any system which I could modify them on. He suggested I speak to Chris Barr as he had done work on After Effects and may be able to help me.

So I spoke with Chris this morning and he was very helpful. I want to record more material over the weekend so he is going to help me with the new footage on Monday. He also gave me contact details for designer Priya Mistry who has done work for channel 4 in the past. I’ve dropped her an email to see if she could have a quick look at my work and give me some pointers.

I’ve also picked up  new camera (Praktica dvc 10.4 hdmi). It’s a high defination camera so hopefully I’ll get sharper images.

Ident ideas: shadows: Casio Exilim 12.1 mega pixels

I then held the stencil on it’s side and shown light though it which cast the logo at different elongated angles. This gave a slightly spooky feel to the piece. It also flowed quite nice on screen. 

As these videos were taken in different angles I will turn them around in after effects and then add sound and text. I think these videos are working best and I will keep experimenting with different light conditions to try and get the best footage.

Textured logo

Yesterday evening I worked on the textured logo like John asked. I cut sections of the potato prints out in the different shapes of the logo. I’ll show John the new version in class on Thursday. I’m going to work on new footage for the rest of the day.

Back at Uni

I started back this morning after the Easter break. I showed John all the work I had done over Easter. He really liked the textures of the potato prints and thought they looked more interesting than the original logo. He wants me to try and apply the textures of the prints to the logo and see if it improves the logo.

I showed him all the footage I have so far for the TV ident. He agreed with me that the shower ident wasn’t really working as the 64 logo was too hard to read. He liked the idea of the coffee stain ident and thought that the last footage was better when I removed all the unnecessary objects like the milk and sugar bowl. He wants me to continue experimenting with different ideas until Thursday. 


I showed him the photographs I took of the stencilled logo with light and shadow. He thought this was quite interesting and to try it on camera.

Shadows

I started to experiment with shadow. I made a stencil of the logo and raised it off a white background and then moved light around it to cast shadows in different areas and create variations of tones. I used a tripod to keep the camera as still as possible so the focus was always on the logo. I like the fact that you see different parts of the logo at different times, and because of the unique shape of the logo the shadows cast are visual interesting.

I took some new footage today with some of my other ident ideas. I'm not sure if the soap idea is going to work. It's quite hard to see the logo with the soap as it's white. I may need to rethink this idea.

However the new coffee ident looks much better. I took more of an aerial shoot of it and removed all the distracting objects so it was only the mug in view at all times.

Ident idea: Coffee stain: Casio Exilim 12.1 mega pixels

The 64 stamp wasn’t clear enough, I had printed it and added brown paint to make it jump out more on the camera, however it doesn’t look realistic. I then made a stencil of the logo which was the exact size of the bottom of the mug. I then made coffee stains with it which had a more lifelike quality to it. However it was still too light on screen. I tried a different angle on the shoot to see if it improved the film. However I wasn’t happy with how the mug and logo was appearing on screen. I want more of an aerial shoot. The last two are working a bit better. The logo print is darker and shows up clearer on screen. I just want the movements to be a bit smoother. Looking back over the footage I think there is too much going on all the videos. I want the viewer to focus on the mug and then the coffee stain print left behind. However all the other objects are distracting from this. I’ll try it again with only the mug in screen.
